four fabric pet portraits of a cat, a horse, and two dogs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cost of a pet portrait or memorial?

The price of each custom work depends upon the complexity of the image, the size, and the fabric.

Due to the smaller sizes of the 8″ x 10″ and 12″ x 12″ canvas, those portraits only show faces and are not as detailed as larger sizes.

  • 8″ x 10″ (face only): $100
  • 12″ x 12″ (face only): $150
  • Larger designs start at $200

Sales tax (if applicable) and shipping are not included. There is an additional fee for more than one pet and for rush orders.

Yes, I want a fabric portrait. What's the next step?

Email me. If you have a photograph of the pet, feel free to send it with your inquiry. Otherwise, you can send one later. I will respond within three business days.

Can I include more than one animal in the art piece?

Yes, multiple animals can be done in one portrait that is at least 16″ x 20″ or larger. The final size will determine the degree of detail in each animal. There is a minimum fee of $125 to add a second animal to your pet portrait.

What size can a canvas-mounted custom piece be?

I have 8″ x 10″, 12″ x 12″, 16″ x 20″, and 18″ x 24″ canvas at my studio. Other standard sizes can be ordered.

Are pets the only custom subject you do?

No, I can create custom fabric pictures of other subjects. Originally, I only created landscapes and expanded over time to other themes, eventually specializing in pet portraits. So send me a photo of that special place, and I will let you know if I can create it!

If the image is copyrighted, you will need to provide written proof that you have the artist’s permission for me to use their work as a reference photo. I cannot do characters, as those companies do not permit replication of their trademarked images.

How long will it take for my order to be ready?

Usually it takes 6-8 weeks to complete a custom order. Time frames may vary, depending upon how many orders are in the queue, whether I need to order special fabric, and the timeliness of your response to my emails.

During the process of creating your art piece, you will receive photographs of the work in progress along with questions where I need your feedback on fabric colors or whether I need to change a particular detail. A detailed photo essay of the creation of one dog portrait can be found in my blog.

If your pet piece is needed by a specific date, that information must be communicated at time of inquiry. While I can sometimes do rush orders, there is an additional fee for that service.

How do these hang up?

All canvas-mounted art pieces and wall hangings come ready-to-hang. The canvas art has rings and wire stretched across the back, while the wall hangings have a pocket with a flat shim and hanging wire stretched from one end of the shim to the other. You can easily replace the shim with your own dowel.

Matted pieces do not come ready to hang. Some people frame their pieces; others display them on an easel.

How do I pay?

All purchases in the shop are processed through Square.

Custom orders: I accept Mastercard and Visa if you are paying in full. Once the price of your piece has been determined, I will send you a confirmation email along with an invoice from the credit card processor, Square. You can also pay by personal check. If you have paid a deposit, full payment is due before beginning your custom order.

I'd love to give this as a gift but I'm not sure what photo is their favorite. What can I do?

I offer gift certificates. Contact me and we can talk about size, type and price.  I’ll then send you an email invoice and once you’ve paid, I’ll mail your gift certificate to you along with a note for the recipient of their next steps.

Thinking of a Christmas gift?

Fall tends to be a busy time for pet portraits, so the sooner you place an order the better. I’ve started holiday gifts in August! The hardest part will be keeping it a secret for so long.

Do you teach classes or conduct workshops?

Yes, I am available for individual or small group instruction. I have offered: Beginning Landscapes, Intermediate Landscapes, and Beginning Animal/Pet Portraits. I am also available to teach Intermediate Animal/Pet Portraits. Classes range from 2 to 5 hours, depending on content, and can be done in one or multiple sessions.

I offer individual and small group instruction at my home studio in North Bennington, VT, and other locations.

How can I personalize a pet memorial?

There are many ways to add even more personal touches to a pet memorial portrait. For example, a heart (or other shape) can be sewn on the back of a pillow or wall hanging as a pocket. The birth/adoption date and passing/transition date can be added using fabric pen. If designed as a canvas mount, a heart can be added to the overall design. Also, I can incorporate special items unique to the pet, such as a dog’s bandana or nametag.
