Silk Road Covered Bridge in Summer

  • 16″ x 20,” including mat
  • Cotton and batik fabric
  • Machine applique

Covered bridges seem to be as much a part of Vermont as maple syrup. Some openly invite walkers with a pedestrian lane clearly delineated in wood. Some encourage one to pause and gaze through the crossed planks to the river below. Some are completely functional - boxed in. Each has a story to tell.

There are three covered bridges on the way from my house to my oldest grandson’s home. I have traversed Silk Road Bridge countless times on the way back and forth. When he was younger, I would ask “Which bridge? Silk Road, Paper Mill, or Henry?” and whichever one he selected would be our roadmap.

This matted fabric picture depicts the Silk Road Bridge from the bank on the northeast corner. Created from cotton and batik fabric, the piece is constructed using raw-edge applique technique and then mounted on a matboard. It is ready to just pop into a frame and makes a perfect covered bridge gift for someone who loves history.
